Demolition under way
The last remaining tenants left their properties at Butterburn Square in the Hilltown earlier this year.
The work, carried out by Dundee City Council, will see the block of 32 flats replaced with 20 new flats.
Former councillor Jimmy Black said although it was the “right decision” to demolish the building, he was “unhappy” at the rehousing process for tenants.
He said: “Everyone was fully aware something had to be done.
“There were issues with roof leaks and anti social behaviour.
“The new homes should have been built next to the Butterburn Square site, keeping the community together.
“Although I don’t agree with the process I do feel the recent demolition will make a huge difference to the area. handed over to the local authority by builders in 1973.
However, they soon followed the lead of Alexander Street, which had its Maxwelltown, Carnegie, Jamaica and Wellington tower blocks demolished in 2011 to make way for new housing.
New homes have since been built on the sites of the Alexander Street multis, with the first tenants being given their keys in December.
Other developments at the site still ongoing.
Mr Black said: “The new properties will also be a huge boost to businesses in the area as well as a new school being built in the area.”
Current Coldside councillor Mark Flynn added: “It’s a really exciting time for the whole area with new properties being built.
“I know some residents were sad to see the former building go, but it’s time to look forward to a new era for the Hilltown.”
