Junior set-up will face big changes

- BY JUNICUS

THE junior leagues face a big shake-up next season following an EGM of the East Region on Tuesday.

The meeting was arranged after an announcement that a number of clubs from across the country would be departing the junior scene and joining the SPFL pyramid system.

The proposal that seems to be favoured by most clubs is a three-league set-up which would include a Super League plus North and South leagues.

If the proposal goes through it is likely that six local clubs would be in the top league and those will be Lochee United, Carnoustie, Broughty Athletic, Tayport, Forfar WE and Jeanfield.

The remaining clubs from Dundee, Angus and Perth plus St Andrews and Newburgh from Fife would comprise the North League.

It is also proposed that four clubs would be relegated from the top league each season and two clubs from each of the other two leagues would be promoted.

Meanwhile, Downfield, who are likely to be in the North League next season, will play their final match in the Premier League tomorrow.

They play hosts to Haddington and have a score to settle with their opponents having lost 3-0 when the sides last met.

Tayport still have two games to play, starting with Blackburn at home tomorrow before completing t heir season at Fauldhouse the following Saturday.

The Fifers will be hoping to sign off from The Canniepairt with a win and avenge a 2-1 defeat when the pair met earlier in the season.
