Factory site brought up to date in new homes plan
PLANS have been tabled to turn a dilapidated factory site into a new affordable housing scheme.
Cullross Limited and Caledonia Housing Association have submitted a joint planning application to Dundee City Council to regenerate the former Maxwelltown Works on Alexander Street, in the Hilltown area.
The proposed scheme, designed by JMA Architects, would see the construction of 57 rented and low-cost homes, consisting of one and two-bedroom flats, and two, three and fourbedroom homes.
Emma Garry, development director at Cullross, said: “This is a site that we have tracked for a while and have been very keen to develop.
“We recently completed homes at the end of Alexander Street on Dens Road, so we know the area well and are keen to contribute in any way we can to the regeneration of Alexander Street.”
The former factory site has been blighted by fly-tipping and vandalism for several years.
Cullross and Caledonia have promised the design will be “sympathetic” to the site’s industrial past, and make a positive contribution to the ongoing regeneration of the area. Andrew Kilpatrick, asset director at Caledonia Housing Association, said: “The site provides an ideal location for a mix of low-cost home ownership and high quality affordable rent homes and reaffirms Caledonia’s commitment to work with Dundee City Council to provide homes and services that make life better.”
If the application is successful it is hoped work will start this winter.
The new homes would then be handed over to Caledonia Housing by spring 2020.
