More cash to stabilise headstones
PLANS to spend another £40,000 to stabilise headstones in Dundee cemeteries will be discussed by councillors next week.
The work is part of more than £70,000 of environmental tenders to be considered, which i nclude work to spruce-up Provost Road and Canning Street by planting trees and making other improvements.
Native trees, such as silver birch, hawthorn and whitebeam, will be planted to enhance air quality.
Space will be created to make room for Eurobins, taking traditional bins off the street.
Neighbourhood services committee convener Kevin Cordell said it is important to improve the appearance of the city.
He said: “These projects are important to making the city look and feel more attractive. I’m sure these works will enrich our local environment and ensure everyone can enjoy it.”
In addition to the work, councillors are being asked to approve a tender for the continuation of the cemetery headstone stability programme.
The council has made significant progress in the last few years in recording and making headstones safe. Any dangerous ones of up to 5ft have been dealt with during t he inspection process.
Funding of £40,000 is available to help future efforts to make any dangerous stones safe and to continue an i nspection programme.
Mr Cordell added: “This investment will allow an ongoing safety regime across our cemeteries.”
