No way for one-way

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

Will Dawson was responding to concerns raised about a build-up of cars in Dean Avenue, Craigie, after claims emergency vehicles are unable to access properties.

The issue was raised after Stewart Ellis, 66, complained to Dundee City Council after an ambulance was unable to access the house of his 96-year-old mother-in-law.

But Councillor Dawson, who represents the area, believes there is no short-term solution to the problem.

He is calling for residents to try to park further away from their homes in a bid to curb the problem.

The SNP councillor said: “That particular street was never designed for cars but obviously we’re now seeing quite a large number in that area.

“The one-way system for me is a non-starter because what you find is when a one-way system is introduced

“It’s something as a city council we need to address and we might see a difference with the pavement parking policy coming through Holyrood at the moment.

“But as far as a one-way system is concerned I am 100% against it.”

But Mr Ellis rubbished the response and believes action needs to be taken immediately by Dundee City Council.

He said: “It’s nonsensical to be quite honest.

“For me it would be common sense if they levelled the pavement and tarred the grass area there to make a car park or to create a car park in the football square nearby which you’re not allowed to play ball games in at the moment.

“It’s totally impossible to get people to park away from their homes.

“There’s got to be a better solution than that.

“It’s also a problem in Noran Avenue as well, you’ve got people parking on the corner there. They’ve got to do something about it soon.”

A COUNCILLOR say plans to introduce a one-way system in a congested city street are a “non-starter”.
