Watchdog’s praise for housing support service

A DUNDEE housing support service for vulnerable people has been praised by the care watchdog for the quality of its service and staff.

Gowrie Care’s Dundee West Housing Support Service was given “very good” ratings by the Care Inspectorate following an inspection last month.

The charity is part of the Hillcrest group of companies, based in Dundee, which also includes Hillcrest Housing Association.

Hillcrest describes Gowrie Care as a charity that supports “people who have a learning disability, mental health problems, people on the autism spectrum and those who are or have been homeless”.

Care Inspectorate staff spoke to residents assisted by Gowrie Care who said they were happy with the quality of the care they received.

A report published by the watchdog noted staff were “warm and caring” towards the people they worked with, and showed “very good knowledge” of their individual needs, preferences and choices.

One informal recommendation was issued, reminding managers at the service to ensure medication records are signed and dated.

However, no formal requirements were issued by inspectors.

Joy Dunlop, managing director of Gowrie Care, said her team was “delighted” with the findings.

She added: “I would like to congratulate all staff at the service who work hard to ensure we receive these impressive grades.

“As with any inspection we will take on board any feedback where there is room for improvement.

“Staff work closely with service users to ensure that we are meeting their needs and I am always impressed with the added value activities that are ongoing in the service.” the visiting
