Dundee boxer back in the ring

- BY JAMES MASSON

DUNDEE bantamweight professional boxer Jamie Wilson steps back into the ring tonight after an 11-month absence.

He boxes on the St Andrew’s Sporting Club show at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu hotel against the experienced Jose Hernandez.

Hernandez, a Nicaraguan based in Spain, is 29 and a regular visitor to these shores, having boxed in both Scotland and England.

He is tough and durable and should provide a stern test for 26-year-old Wilson, who has a 10 wins, two losses record – both his defeats coming in title bouts.

Last time out he lost in Doncaster to Josh Wale for the British title and his previous defeat was to Anthony Nelson in Newcastle for the Commonwealth championship.

After tonight’s bout, Wilson is scheduled to meet Scott Allan in Paisley on October 6 for the Celtic title.

LAWRENCE Okiole claimed the Commonwealth cruiserweight title with an emphatic third-round stoppage of Luke Watkins.

The 25-year-old, a 2016 Olympian for Team GB, sent Watkins to the canvas twice in the third round, continuing his undefeated start to professional boxing.

The win means that, after just nine fights, he has two belts, having already held the WBA Contintental title.

Watkins was also undefeated but finally suffered a loss in his 13th fight after being overpowered in Bethnal Green.
