Lochee so close to historic victory

- BY JUNICUS

LOCHEE United finished top dogs among local clubs in the Super League with the Bluebells finishing in sixth position on 45 points.

There was disappointment for George Shields’ side in the East of Scotland and GA Cup competitions, making early exits in both.

However, they more than made up for it in the Scottish Cup and were only 14 minutes away from making the final.

They had some terrific wins on their path to the semi-final, notably three away victories against top Ayrshire sides.

They were 2-0 winners over Irvine Meadow in the fifth round and another trip to Ayrshire in the next round saw Connor Birse score a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Beith.

They were then drawn against cup favourites Auchinleck Talbot in a two legged semi-final with the first leg away from home.

Despite being under the cosh for long spells, they returned with a 1-0 victory.

Home hopes were high that they could reach their second Scottish Cup Final and it looked on the cards when they held out for 76 minutes in the second leg.

However, two quick goals from Talbot, who would go on to win the trophy, dashed their hopes.

Not surprisingly, Lochee’s form dipped in the remaining league games of the season.

Manager George Shields is sure to strengthen his squad for the new campaign and they will be among the favourites to lift the title, whatever league they are playing in.
