Cora Bissett bringing Gagarin Way to Dundee Rep

-

FIFE-born actor, director and musician Cora Bissett is bringing her latest production to Dundee.

Bissett will direct a new production of Gagarin Way at Dundee Rep Theatre between October 16 and November 3.

Set in Fife, Gagarin Way addresses the departure of socialist values from a region where political radicalism was once the cornerstone of the community.

The play was written by Gregory Burke and first appeared in a theatre in 2001.

It follows disillusioned computer factory workers Eddie and Gary who have a plan to make the ultimate political statement — kidnap a member of senior management and send a message to the world.

Their plot starts to unravel when security guard Tom stumbles in on them.

Worse still, the kidnapping hasn’t quite gone to plan.

Gagarin Way is described as offering a stark insight into the harshest realities of Scottish society, tempered with fiery black humour.

Among the venues to have hosted productions of the play are the National Theatre and the West End in London.

Bissett is best known for her musical Glasgow Girls, which followed a group of activists that took up an ethical fight against the deportation of asylum seekers who had settled in Scotland.

She is also recognised for writing the music for the stage version of Emma Donoghue’s book Room and in 2014 she became a part-time associate director at the National Theatre of Scotland.

Doors for some performances open at 2.30pm, while others are at 7.30pm.
