ROUND-UP Forfarshire’s efforts undone after DL defeat

- BY EXTRA COVER

THIS weekend’s round of cricket fixtures resulted in wins for RH Corstorphine, Grange, Carlton, Stewarts Melville and Heriot’s.

At East Barnton, Forfarshire skipper Umair Mohammed won the toss and decided to bat.

The opening pair of Garden and Johnston put on 70 before the former was dismissed for 34.

Wallace then joined Johnston and the pair then put on another good partnership.

When Johnston fell for a well-made 81 there followed a middle-order collapse.

However, Forfarshire managed to make 249 all out with Wallace making 70.

In reply, Corstorphine made 152-4 in 31 overs with pro Asam making an impressive 97.

Unfortunately for the Dundee side, the hosts were 14 runs ahead on Duckworth Lewis, which resulted in a victory for the Edinburgh outfit.

Top-of-the-table Grange, without Budge and Mommsen, maintained their 100% record, beating Arbroath by six wickets.

Veteran Stewart Davidson took 4-23 as Grange restricted Arbroath to 147-8, with Craig Cameron top scoring with 39.

Grange chased down the score in 30 overs with Flanagan making 50 not out.

Carlton travelled to Mannofield and beat Aberdeenshire on their home patch.

Carlton batted first and made 195 all out with Neame top scoring with 45.

Aberdeenshire only made 147 all out with A Pillai taking 3-34 and pro Castle taking 2-16.

Heriot’s scraped a threewicket victory over Edinburgh rivals Watsonians.

Batting first, Watsonians made 195-7 with Chalmers making 46 and Ruthven taking 3-30.

Heriot’s struggled at the start, losing early wickets in clusters. However, they got over the line thanks to Simon Whait, who made a handy 45 not out.

Steel made a composed 60 not out to get Stewarts Melville over the line and chase down 164 for the loss of five wickets to add more misery to Glenrothes’ winless season.

The star performer for Glens was Ben Wilkinson, who made 68.

In the West League, the big surprise was Greenock securing a 35-run victory over the previously-unbeaten Ferguslie.

IAN Bell’s first Specsavers County Championship century since April 2016 earned Warwickshire a narrow first-innings lead over Glamorgan on a gripping and hard-fought second day at Edgbaston.

In reply to 220, the Division Two leaders were bowled out for 250 with Bell left unbeaten on 106, having faced 248 balls and hit 12 fours.

Bell’s 53rd first-class century – and first against Glamorgan – was a work of substantial concentration.

He took more than three hours to reach 50 and then, perhaps fuelled by determination to make up for a bad call which ran out Jonathan Trott for 57, accelerated the scoring rate.

Glamorgan pared away effectively at his partners, though. Led by Timm van der Gugten (four for 65) and Lukas Carey (three for 56), they bowled collectively well to maintain pressure on the batsmen. And after bowling out the shots they reached the close on 55 without loss in their second innings to leave the game finely poised.
