March calls for Grenfell ‘justice’

-

A SILENT march will be held in the city centre this week to mark the first anniversary of the Grenfell tower fire.

The ceremony is being organised by Dundee Trades Union Council, the Fire Brigades Union and Dundee People’s Assembly, and is endorsed by the Grenfell United and Justice4Grenfell groups.

The march will begin at the Burns Statue in Albert Square, outside the McManus Galleries, and proceed to City Square for a vigil and commemoration service. A series of short speeches and contributions will follow the commemorations.

A leaflet advertising the Dundee march calls for people “to show the government that the campaign will not stop until justice is delivered for every victom of Grenfell”.

It is one of several events taking place across the country to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy.

The fire at the Grenfell Tower in Kensington, London, broke out in the early hours of June 14, 2017. The cause of the fire is believed to have been a malfunctioning fridge freezer on the tower’s fourth floor, which spread rapidly throughout the building due to the type of exterior cladding used.

In total 72 people were killed, and a further 70 were injured.

Many of the survivors who lost their homes are still living in temporary accomodation.

A public inquiry into the blaze began in September, and started hearing evidence in public last month.
