Midwife Gill retires after 40 years at Ninewells

A SENIOR midwife at Ninewells Hospital has retired after 40 years of loyal service to parents and newborns i n Dundee.

Gill Allen, senior charge midwife in the Ninewells labour suite, was praised by colleagues, who described her departure as “a loss to the whole department”.

Gill started her career in 1978 at Ninewells while she was still at school and began general nurse training in 1980.

After graduating, she began working as a nurse i n the female surgical ward and in 1985 began her midwifery training at Ninewells.

NHS Tayside said i n a statement: “Gill is renowned for her excellent teaching skills and was i nvolved i n developing the midwifery team and introduced midwife-led clinics whilst helping to develop and teach emergency training skills to medical staff and midwives.

She was also an active member of the Royal College of Midwifery and was their chairperso­n for five years.”

Senior midwife Chrissie Hastings added: “Gill is an excellent role model and support for all students and staff and she will be remembered for her ability to just get on with things in really hectic times.

“We will all miss Gill, and her retirement will be a loss to the whole department. I would like to say thank you for all your hard work and wish you happiness and good luck in your retirement.”
