Vandals damage shelter

A SHELTER at Arbroath’s Victoria Park has been seriously damaged by vandals for a third time in a matter of days, with the latest incident costing the taxpayer more than £1,000.

The historic park, which is popular with nature lovers, dog walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, has been targeted by vandals on a number of occasions in recent years, with drivers damaging grassed areas, forcing the local authority to erect wooden barriers.

Previously, the iconic pillars at the entrance to the park had been“tagged” with paint as part of a spate of vandalism in the town.

The latest incident involved a bin next to the shelter being set on fire.

Wooden seating in the shelter was also destroyed, and walls suffered significant damage, leaving brickwork exposed, with some speculating that a heavy tool such as a sledgehammer was used in the attack.

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “Vandalism is both senseless and disgraceful.”

Meghan Mitchell, 21, has been waiting for more than two years to find ground-floor accommodation for her and her two-year-old daughter Keyara.

In January, she told the Tele that her property on Atholl Street, Lochee, was no longer suitable as she had to carry her daughter up the three flights of stairs to their third-floor home.

But more than six months, on nothing has been done – and Meghan claims she has now been told to chain Keyara’s wheelchair up and leave it in the close while she carries her up the stairs.

Keyara was registered blind in February l ast year and also has cerebral palsy.

The condition – which affects movement and co-ordination – is caused by a problem with the brain that occurs before, during or soon after birth.

Mum-of-one Meghan has epilepsy and fears she may have a fit while carrying her up the stairs to their home.

Keyara, who will turn three in November, was issued with a wheelchair last week.

The addition of the wheelchair has meant Meghan is unable to get the youngster down or up stairs without the assistance of others.

Despite repeated attempts to contact the housing office regarding the matter she says she is no further forward to a resolution.

Meghan said: “Since the previous article ran in January, I am no further forward in getting any resolution to

A MUM says she and her disabled daughter have been left “stranded” in their own home after failed attempts to find them suitable housing.
