New project to brighten up city bins with artwork
BUDDING Banksys are being sought to help brighten up the city’s Eurobins.
OpenClose Dundee is calling on artists and designers to take part in its revamp of bins on the Perth Road this summer.
The street art project – which has been responsible for dozens of murals in the city centre and Stobswell – has been commissioned to carry out the work by Dundee City Council.
Artists have until July 4 to submit examples of their work, with 17 Eurobins set to be painted.
The idea for the new project – dubbed Waste of Space – originated from the Dundee Decides initiative which saw residents across the city vote on new developments in their area.
Russell Pepper, manager of OpenClose Dundee, said: “Basically this is coming off the back of the Dundee Decides funding where people voted for improvements to the Perth Road shopping area.
“Part of that was to include new street art in the area and this will be the first phase of that.
“Dundee City Council has brought us on board and it is fantastic for us to be getting paid to carry this out.
“We’re going to be calling it Waste of Space and artists have an open invitation to submit their work.”
Russell added: “We’re hoping to get some interesting applications and they’ll be painting 17 bins in total.
“That will include paper, recycling and general waste bins.
“We’re hoping that these designs will get the message out there to encourage people to recycle and use the bins properly because there are still a lot of people who aren’t aware of what they’re for.
“The artists will have until August 12 to get them finished before we seek new funding for what else we’re going to do in the Perth Road.”
The Stobswell art trail, developed in time for the annual Stobfest, received high praise from residents and community groups in the area.
OpenClose Dundee gathered momentum as residents and visitors showed an appetite to explore the city in search of Oor Wullies during the Bucket Trail.
Russell said: “It’s been great for us to get the support from the council and that we’re being commissioned to lead these projects.
“We are looking for a bit of funding to do other trails in the Hilltown and Lochee but we’ll be doing more work on the Perth Road once we get this first phase completed. There is certainly a lot more to come.”
