Crossing work begins
Part of Kingsway to close for two safety installations
ONE of the busiest stretches of road in Dundee is set to close twice in the next two weeks so new pedestrian crossings can be installed.
The A90 Kingsway will close eastbound between the Old Glamis Road roundabout and the Forfar Road junction from 7.30pm on Friday until 6.30am next Monday.
The dual carriageway will then close in the opposite direction, westbound from Forfar Road to Old Glamis Road, from 7.30pm on Friday July 6 until 6.30am on Monday July 9.
During each closure, vehicles will likely be diverted via either Claverhouse Road or Clepington Road.
The closures are being instigated by Dundee City Council in order to install new sets of pedestrian crossings that will make getting to and from Caird Park safer for walkers and cyclists.
Workers will install Toucan-style crossings, which have wider crossing paths than Pelican or Puffin crossings, along the Kingsway.
Council chiefs do not expect the crossings to cause traffic build-ups, as they will only activate when required by crossing pedestrians or cyclists.
As revealed by the Tele last year, the council drew up plans to install the crossings at the Kingsway’s junctions with Graham Street and Mains Loan.
The plans were made possible by a Scottish Government grant to encourage people to walk and cycle.
Severe disruption is expected as a result of each closure, as the road is the main link between the central belt and Aberdeenshire.
Analysis from traffic counters operated by the Department for Transport shows that, on average, more than 38,000 vehicles travel eastbound on the road every day.
These include more than 28,000 cars, 135 buses, 6,900 light goods vehicles and 2,800 heavy goods vehicles such as articulated lorries.
A Dundee City Council spokeswoman said: “These closures are to facilitate the installation of new dual Toucan crossings linked to Caird Park.”
