Covering the costs of school can be a struggle

-

PARENTS should be given more help to cover the costs of the school day.

As someone with two children, I was shocked to learn that when my kids went to nursery, I had to pay to cover the costs of snacks they receive during their time there.

Maybe that’s me being naive but I’d never been aware of that cost before.

I don’t mind handing over £2 a week per child, but to someone struggling to feed their family, that’s the cost of a home meal. Nursery is cheap in comparison to school, however, given there’s no need for things like uniforms and stationery.

Buying school clothes puts huge pressure on people, and if you’ve got two or three to cater for, it really bites hard.

That’s before you consider money for lunch, new shoes, bags, pencil cases, and all the rest of it – and don’t mention the school trips!

You don’t need to be on benefits, or living in poverty, to struggle to cover these costs, and I believe the government needs to look again at the support it’s giving to people.

Concerned.
