Police hunt driver following assault

- BY JAMES SIMPSON AND DENNY ANDONOVA

WITNESSES have described their shock after a woman was assaulted near a busy road in Dundee.

An area of South Road was cordoned off yesterday as police launched a search for a man who fled the area in a red Fiat 500.

A motorist driving past the scene shortly before midday said she saw a man and woman involved in a “physical altercation”.

She said: “There were three people inside the red car. The man and the woman got out and they both had their arms raised.

“It was definitely a physical altercation. The woman looked like she had been hurt.

“Cars pulled over and one of the drivers contacted the police.

“The drivers tried to help as the incident took place on the grassy area.

“The other woman got out of the car before the guy kicked the vehicle. He then got back inside. His car mounted the grass before driving off towards the direction of Buttars Loan.”

Crime scene officers were on the scene scouring the area in the aftermath of the disturbance, taking photographs and putting evidence into brown bags.

One resident who declined to be named said two ambulance crews had attended the incident.

He said: “When I drove past someone was inside the ambulance, but I couldn’t see who it was.

“Police had partially closed off the road but it was still open.

“There were a few members of the public giving statements to the police.”

Another resident added: “I didn’t hear any sirens.

“I initially thought there had been a car crash as there appeared to be a broken tail light on the road.

“It appeared there was maybe one vehicle involved.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said officers were following a “positive” line of inquiry, and were looking for the male driver of the red Fiat car.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed a woman was taken to Ninewells Hospital.
