Artist to talk about Antarctic adventures

-

AN award-winning artist is to give a free talk about his adventures on the ice - br e a ke r H M S P r ote c tor a n d encounters with Antarctic wildlife.

Darren Rees will stage his event at the RRS Discovery on Saturday at 7pm and organisers are advising that advance booking is essential.

Darren will also discuss his exhibition Ice Bound which is currently on show in the cafe at Discovery Point.

It documents his travels and the wildlife he came across including penguins, whales and elephant seals.

Darren received the coveted artist in residency honour from the Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute in 2015.

And last year he travelled with the Royal Navy on the ice-breaker HMS Protector from the Falkland Islands to the Antarctic Peninsula.

His Ice Bound exhibition, and book with Mascot Media, reveals his journey in the far south with works depicting the busy penguin colonies on the Falklands at Volunteer Point, Gypsy and Telephone Coves plus encounters with elephant seals, blue-eyed shags and Adelie penguin residents of Rothera British Antarctic Survey base and the stunning sight of whale-filled seas of Antarctica.

Most of the collection of sketches, watercolour and acrylic paintings were completed in situ in Antarctica, but also in the show are some larger canvases which Darren painted in the studio on his return, including pieces which are being exhibited for the first time.
