Eating Even my ice cream came in a tortilla!

-

DESPITE its popularity as a holiday destination, I’ll bet that most people’s experience of Mexico stretches only as far as downing a shot of tequila in the pub.

The thought of it makes me feel a bit poorly, but I would happily don a sombrero in tribute to the South American country’s food – even if the version we eat here probably falls some way short of the real stuff you get across the pond. Enough of the cliches. Having never ventured over the border on my one and only visit to the States 15 years ago, I can’t comment on how close Chiquito comes to replicating the fare of Mexico. But I can confidently say it’s enough to have me shouting “arriba, arriba!” nonetheless (sorry).

Mexican eateries seem to be on trend, with burrito bars popping up across the country, not least in Dundee. Chiquito has been around longer than most of them, and although we don’t have one here in the City of Discovery, it’s not too far to travel for the outlet at Fife Leisure Park.

Like many similar chain restaurants, it has a fairly extensive menu.

I’ll be honest and say that I’ve never really been an expert on the differences between an enchilada and a chimichanga – all I know is they’re tortillas with fillings presented in a different way.

The restaurant’s build-your-own section allows you to select from these, along with tacos or burritos, for £10.99 each – then you select what goes inside, ranging from chicken to pulled pork and five bean chilli.

There was only one thing going inside my burrito, beef chilli, and it came served like a wrap – huge and overflowing with filling, and a side of skinon fries.

My filling had what I know as an authentic chilli taste with peppers and plenty of spice, ensuring I put my pint of San Miguel to good use.

I was probably halfway through trying to tuck my main away when I regretted having ordered a starter – which had also been sizeable.
