Hot hatches come to Museum of Transport

TRANSPORT museum chiefs were expecting a clutch of sports cars today for a new exhibition.

Owners had hoped to bring “hot hatches” to the attraction last week following the re-opening of Dundee’s Museum of Transport after a winter break.

However, the freezing temperatur­es forced many drivers to scrap plans for heading to the city.

Peter Webber, vice chairman of DMoT, said: “We are still negotiatin­g with a couple of owners to persuade them to bring their cars to us. But, quite understand­ably, a few didn’t want to drive on roads which had been treated with salt and grit.

“They obviously take very good care of their vehicles and didn’t want to risk them on icy roads and even those which had been treated due to the damage salt can cause the bodywork.”

He added: “We anticipate a few more will arrive with their cars this week.

“Among the cars on show will be Golf GTis, an XR3i, Vauxhaul GTEs and possibly a Lotus Sunbeam.”

The museum only re-opened last week after a shut down for a revamp including some painting.

Mr Webber explained that an old Aberdeen tram had been transferre­d to Grampian Transport Museum which had then released a lot of space for new exhibits. And the sports cars feature first. The transport museum’s board are still hopeful of relocating to Maryfield Tram Depot as they look to find the £1.5 million required to make the move. Fundraisin­g drives are set to
