A writer, I was born in London in 1792. I won the Royal Humane Society’s Gold Medal for inventing a lifeboat after an adventurous naval career, but resigned to concentrate on writing. I wrote several novels before turning my hand to children’s fiction, including Masterman Ready and The Children of the New Forest.
