Deadly double act has Lochee smiling

- BY JUNICUS

A STUNNING second-half performance saw Lochee United sweep past Craigmark a nd go th rough to t he quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup for the second year running.

Both sides found it difficult to adapt to the heavy pitch and howling wind in the first half and, with chances few and far between, it was little surprise it ended goalless.

However, whatever George Shields said in his team talk at half-time had the desired effect as the Bluebells controlled the second 45.

Scott McComiskie set the ball rolling with the opener and the Bluebells pressure paid off when Connor Birse doubled their lead.

McComiskie then pounced to add his second of the day and, just to rub it in, Birse struck again late in the game to make the final score 4-0.

The reward for Shields’ side is another trip to the Ayrshire coast to meet West Premiership side Troon in the last eight.

It was the proverbial game of two halves at The Canniepairt in the Super League where Tayport were left deflated after a late goal gave Whitburn a 2-1 victory.

The Fifers took the lead in 28 minutes when a Chris Liversedge cutback was swept into the net by Josh Chalmers.

The hosts were on top but couldn’t add to their lead and, out of the blue, Whitburn equalised just before half-time through Darren Liddell.

The visitors called the tune for much of the second half and the Fifers were shell-shocked in the final minute when Grant Hamilton grabbed a winner for Whitburn.

Violet had to come from behind to get a victory over second-bottom Forfar Albion in the Premier League North.

The Pansies were stunned when Fraser Sturrock gave Albion the lead after quarter-of-an-hour and they held on to their lead until half-time.

It was a different Violet side in the second half, however.

Andy Pattullo grabbed the equaliser in 55 minutes and, five minutes later, a Gavin Thomson free-kick hit the post but Kamil Kadela followed up to net the rebound. Then, just to make sure, Sean Tucker fired in a third with 10 minutes to go.

East Craigie had little difficulty in picking up the points against Coupar Angus, with the Shipbuilders cruising to a 6-0 victory.

Nik Mann stole the honours with four of the goals with the other two scored by Adam Brown and Conan Howett.

Luncarty maintained their promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at Arbroath Vics. Fraser Briggs scored both after nine and 37 minutes, the second coming from a penalty after newcomer Sigurour Kristjannson from Iceland was brought down.
