Youths take tour of derelict school site

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

TWO former pupils of a derelict school have posted video footage online after goi ng i nto thei r old classrooms.

The 40-minute film was uploaded to YouTube, showing the two youths strolling around the former Our Lady’s Primary School.

The building closed its doors in June of last year and is set to make way for a new women’s custody unit.

Fences have been erected around the perimeter of the building while work is being done to demolish it.

In the footage, the former pupils explain how they entered the site the previous evening before returning the following day when it was light in order to film their findings.

Most items have been removed from the building but a few links to the old school remain.

School noticeboards are still fixed to the walls as well as maps.

The intruders walked through the grounds as well as the gymnasium, dinner hall and former classrooms.

As the film continues, it becomes clear they are not the first to have entered the site, with graffiti and damage around the building, including swastikas that have been sprayed on to the walls.A number of exposed wires can be also be seen in the building. The youths also attempt to touch generator supplies to find out if anything is still live.

It is understood the film may have been streamed live on social media before a final edit was uploaded to YouTube. Despite there appearing to be expensive equipment in the grounds, the duo were able to gain access. One of the youths roams around the building for more than 30 minutes before he fears he’s been spotted. Coldside councillor George McIrvine expressed his concern at the access the pair were able to get to the derelict building. He said: “It’s frustrating that children can access a site that is currently being demolished with relative ease.

“I cannot emphasis enough to children the dangers of heavy machinery on or around sites which is extremely dangerous and cause serious damage. What can look like a fairly inconspicuous pile of rubble or structure will no doubt have hidden dangers. My advice is to stay safe.

“Parents and guardians should ensure their children stay away.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “Buildings that have been cleared for demolition are not safe and we would discourage people from putting themselves in danger.

“We have spoken to the demolition contractor who has control of the site.”
