Mystery on board Discovery

DUNDONIANS are being invited to take part in a mystery at RRS Discovery today.

Organisers stage a lunchtime talk each month featuring an unknown object from the museum collections.

A Discovery spokesman said: “It is being run from 1.15-1.45pm and is open to people of all ages and is free.

“The locations may vary so please check t he website for more information.

“It is a lunchtime event so don’t forget to bring your sandwiches.”

The Discovery staff will also be holding an event called Polar Women on Friday March 8 at 7pm and insisted that booking is “essential” to ensure a place on the night.

A spokesman said: “Women were excluded from Antarctica on the basis the extreme environment would be ‘ too much’ for the ‘weaker sex’ to endure.

“Join our all-female panel for the evening.

“Entry is £5.” A WA R of words has erupted between a senior c it y cou nc i l lor a nd a Lochee community group over a cartoon.

An image posted on Save our High Street Lochee’s Facebook page showing a new business being opened in the area has been slammed as i nappropriate by Councillor Alan Ross.

The cartoon depicts a man painting on to the shop’s front the word “psychotherapist”, spaced out to give the impression the painter has written “psycho the rapist” on the door.

Jayne Kelly, the community campaigner who posted the photo, said the cartoon was harmless and urged the Mr Ross to find a sense of humour.

Mr Ross, who serves as convener of the council’s community safety and public protection committee, told the Tele he was shocked by the image, which he claimed gave the “wrong impression” of Lochee.

He said: “I’m shocked and angry about this. It’s absolutely disgusting and should not be done in Lochee’s name.

“I’m absolutely dumbfounded by it and it’s certainly not the image of Lochee that we want to put out.

“Anyone who has been affected by the issues of rape will feel utterly offended.

“I think for any community group to think it is OK is beyond me.

“Serious questions need to be asked about management. It’s not just rape, they’re having a go at mental health problems too.

“I do a lot of work with the violence against women partnership and you can’t count the number of people who are going to be offended by this. If we belittle these issues, it will feed into the stigma,

“Any community group that wants to do good work is always welcome but some of the tactics here are bizarre at best. It’s just awful.”

Ms Kelly said: “He’s an idiot. It’s a joke about inviting local business into Lochee. It’s working class humour.

“We won’t be removing it and we’ve had no complaints from anyone over it.

“He never engages with us so this is just personal and petty.

She added: “Mr Ross is being immature and if he gets offended, maybe it’s best he doesn’t look on the page. He’s famous for doing this and needs a personality transplant.

“If he wants to play that game, we have a list of complaints.

“Our page isn’t political and we’re very democratic but we’re not an official body so we don’t have any rules on what we can post on social media.”
