’Port’s plaudits but Lochee go through

- BY JUNICUS

LOCHEE United maintained their unbeaten record with a 3-2 victory over Tayport in the Signatures Signs Cup but they were run close by the Fifers, who looked impressive for much of the tie.

In fact they could have taken the lead in the first minute when a Josh Chalmers effort whistled over the bar.

They deservedly took the lead on seven minutes, however, when Dayle Robertson turned neatly in the box and fired a low shot into the corner.

The Bluebells took a while to get going but they hit back in 21 minutes through Connor Birse and, five minutes later, a through pass found Danny Cavanagh and he dinked it over Jack Shaw to give the hosts a rather flattering lead.

’Port continued on the offensive and they were awarded a penalty in 58 minutes for Garry Kenneth’s foul on Jamie Mackie. Robertson made no mistake from the spot and, once again, the home record was on the line.

However, seven minutes later, the Bluebells won the tie with a classy goal when Ross McDonald’s cross was volleyed into the net by Birse.

The home side finished the tie looking much stronger and came close to increasing their lead through Birse and Scott McComiskie but Stevie Kay’s side can take credit after an encouraging display.

Harp were 2-0 winners over landlords Downfield in a fiery tie.

Michael Gormley’s side stretched their unbeaten run since the turn of the year with another impressive display despite finishing with nine men after Nathan Degernier and Mark Kelly picked up red cards.

The Spiders, still looking for their first win of the year, also had a man sent off and could have complaints.

In the end, goals from Ryan McKillen and Graham Allan gave Harp a deserved win.

Luncarty beat Violet 3-1 at Brownlands Park.

Stuart Nicol gave the Bleachers the lead after only four minutes. Ten minutes later Tony Holt doubled the lead, scoring from a spot-kick after he had been brought down. Fraser Mills added a third.

A couple of minutes after the restart Richard Carlisle cracked home from 16 yards but that was the Pansies’ only joy.

North End strolled to a 5-2 win over Lochgelly in the DJ Laing Cup.

The Dokens were always in command with Kevin Milne proving, once again, what a big signing he was with two of the goals. Ryan Rigden also scored a brace and Ryan Smith was their other scorer. few
