Thistle ensure they’re not stung

-

IN the Trident Trophies sponsored Dundee Saturday Morning League (DSMFL) Second Division, there were places up for grabs in the quarter-finals.

Fife Thistle B needed only a draw to progress out of their group at the expense of opponents Clark’s FC who had an inferior goal difference.

They duly got the job done with a 2-2 draw to book their tie against Powrie FC.

North End knew a win against Dundee West would see them through as table toppers and they duly obliged with a 2-0 win.

This set them up for their tie against Dundee Saints who progressed on goal difference from their group.

The Beat topped Group A and will play Dundee West on Saturday while the final tie sees FC Spartak take on Kelso at the University grounds.

While those two cup games were being played there was plenty of drama in the Second Division league chase.

Table-toppers Powrie FC lost only their second game of the campaign, 5-3 to City Rovers, though they remain three points clear at the top albeit North End, who are second, have two games in hand.

The Powrie cause wasn’t helped by the sending off of their keeper during the match.

A brace from Jamie Dolan and one apiece from Arron Davie, Kane Donaldson and Corey Stewart was enough to take Rovers into fourth with five teams getting promoted at the end of the season.

The Beat occupy that fifth promotion place after a 9-0 win over Lochee Albion.

Kelso recorded a 6-1 win over bottom club Dundee Saints who are pointless after 18 l eague games, while FC Spartak’s 11-0 win over Rosebank was their highest scoring result of their campaign.

This weekend sees the remaining four DSMFL clubs vying to join Hilltown Hotspurs i n the Direct Soccer sponsored North of Tay Cup quarter-finals.

Dryburgh have the toughest task with the First Division team heading to Perth to take on 2017 winners and leaders of the Perthshire First Divison, Letham.

St James Athletic are also on their travels, going to play Coupar Angus.

The other two DSMFL teams in action have home ties against Midlands Association rivals.

Park Tool take on last year’s winners Midlands Premier Menzieshill AFC at Drumgieth while Fintry Athletic are at home to Carnoustie YM at Finlathen.
