Tayport look a force under new manager

- BY JUNICUS

MOST clubs are well ahead with their pre-season preparation sand a fair number of friendlies were played on Saturday.

Tayport manager Chris McPherson is delighted with the start they have made and has yet to see them concede a goal.

They followed their 7-0 win over Alyth Amateurs with an equally-comfortable 4-0 win over Lochee Harp.

Last season’s top scorer Dayle Robertson was again their top man, scoring a hat-trick, with new signing Tom Whyte from Kinnoull also on target.

Lochee United were given a good workout by Montrose Roselea.

The Bluebells were forced to come from behind for a 2-1 victory after Callum Rae gave Roselea the lead in 20 minutes.

Connor Birse levelled in 31 minutes and new signing Kevin Milne grabbed the winner with 20 minutes to go.

In addition to the signing of Milne, Lochee have also obtained the signature of Ryan Blair from North End while Ross Gallagher has returned to the club after a spell at Downfield.

Meanwhile, manager George Shields won’t be too disappointed with last week’s William Hill Scottish Cup draw.

They have been handed a home tie in the first preliminary round against Burntisland Shipyard on August 10.

If they overcome the Shippy another home tie awaits them against either Lothian Thistle or Wigtown Bladnoch on August 31.

Carnoustie continued their build-up with a hard-fought 4-2 win against a strong Hermes side.

In a tight game it was 2-2 after 76 minutes with Harvey Dailly and Ryan Dignan netting the Gowfers goals.

However, two goals in the closing stages from Steven McPhee won the day for Phil McGuire’s side.

McGuire has added Paddy Conway to his coaching staff but he will continue to be available as a signed player.

Meanwhile, Dundee FC XI will provide opposition in a testimonial for Carnoustie’s long-serving defender Stevie Cook.

The game goes ahead on Tuesday, July 30, at Laing Park with a 7pm kick-off.

Broughty Athletic had an impressive 2-0 win over Fraserburgh.

New signing Bryan Duell grabbed his first goal for the club with Derryn Kesson also finding the net.

A young Violet side found it tough going against a strong Cambuslang Rangers outfit at Glenesk.

The West Region side ran out 5-1 winners. Ryan Corbitt netted for Violet.
