Ferry backs Dee for league title

-

PETERHEAD midfielder Simon Ferry has backed former club Dundee to win the Championship this season.

The 31-year-old Dundonian, who donned the dark blue in the 2014/15 campaign, believes the Dee have what it takes to bounce back to the Premiership at the first time of asking as league winners.

Following the Blue Toon’s 4-2 Betfred Cup bonus point shootout loss to Dundee at Dens Park on Saturday, Ferry said: “We had a couple of chances and I didn’t think our goalie had a save to make.

“To come here and not have a shot against us, against a team that I think will probably win the Championship, I think the boys have done great.

“I enjoyed it (coming back). It was really good. I thought we started really well and, having played here, I knew if we could frustrate them for the first 20 minutes the fans would get on their backs.

“That was the game-plan and I thought we did that really well.”

Having played against James McPake’s new-look side and watched them rebuild from afar, Ferry thinks they have all the pieces to make a tilt at the second-tier title in the coming term.

He added: “It’s still early doors but I think (Paul) McGowan for the Championship will be brilliant.

“I’ve known him since I was 14 and Jazza is playing him at No 10, his proper position.

“I like the boy ( Andrew) Nelson, I’ve seen him play a couple of times, and I like (Shaun) Byrne as well.

“Once they start to click I think they’ve got good players going forward. I know Jaz and he’s got a good mixture with (No 2) Jimmy Nicholl, so I would back them to win it.”
