SCOTLAND’S U/21 men won the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Plzen Litice, Czech Republ ic, w it h a magnificent display in the final against Russia, t he Scots winning 9-0.

Jamie and Cammy Golden (Grove Menzieshill) played their parts.

Scotland had won their pool match 5-2.

It may have been no surprise that Hamish Roberts ( Loughborough University) fired them into the l ead i n the second minute. However, that was as good as it got by half-time.

The third quarter saw a dramatic improvement as Scotland rattled in five goals without reply.

Struan Walker (Clydesdale) set the ball rolling three minutes after the break.

Jamie Golden made it 3-0 five minutes later.

Jack Jamieson (Edinburgh University) added the fourth, Jamie netted his second and Robbie Croll (Edinburgh University) made it 6-0 from an overtime penalty corner.

The title was clearly Scotland’s by this time but the goals kept coming as the match neared its conclusion.

Jamie completed his hattrick and David Nairn (Clydesdale) and Andrew McConnell ( Western Wildcats) chipped in for a remarkable 9-0 final scoreline.

Ireland, who must have been disappointed to have lost to Scotland in their semi-final, recovered to defeat Turkey 4-1 to win the bronze medal.

Ireland had won all three games in Pool A, scoring 18 goals in the process.

Scotland, with two wins and a defeat in Pool B, finished second to Russia.

However, Scotland had also been highest scorers with 13.

The Scots defeated Ireland by a goal scored by Roberts i n the eighth minute of their semi.

Ireland may have had more of the possession but Scotland denied them room to play their open and effective attacking game.

Martin Rose (Edinburgh University) played his part in goal with a number of good saves.

Cammy Golden so nearly added Scotland’s second when his drag flick was well saved in the bottom left corner so the game finished 1-0 Scotland.

Russia came through the second semi-final in a nine goal thriller against Turkey.

The Russians twice led in the first quarter.

However, Turkey fought back to equalise both times.

It was almost the reverse in the second quarter when Turkey led only for Russia to draw level.

The east Europeans, who had headed Scotland in Pool B, opened up a 5-3 lead in the second half.

They held on despite a late surge which saw Turkey fight back with their fourth goal. However, a fifth eluded them.

Final rankings — 1 Scotland, 2 Russia, 3 Ireland, 4 Turkey, 5 Italy, 6 Belarus, 7 Czech Republic, 8 Portugal.
