Carnoustie working hard to stay on top

- BY JUNICUS

C A R NOUS T I E r e m a i ned top of the Super League in midweek after holding off a late challenge from Tayport, who finished the game with eight men.

The Gowfers took the lead in five minutes through Ryan Dignan and it looked ominous for the Fifers when Gordon McDonald doubled their lead in 35 minutes.

’Port were never out of the game, however, and deservedly pulled one back through Dayle Robertson three minutes from the break but were reduced to 10 men when Jamie Gill was red carded in stoppage time.

Sam Simpson restored the Gowfers’ two-goal advantage from a penalty five minutes after the restart but Tayport refused to give in and Robertson reduced the deficit to one.

In an explosive finish, the Fifers had Kris Rollo ordered off and he was followed by goalscorer Robertson, who picked up a second yellow card as the hosts hung on for a 3-2 win.

The next big test for Phil McGuire’s side is tomorrow when they meet Lochee United at Laing Park.

The Bluebells had comeback men Kevin Milne and Scott McComiskie to thank for their 2-1 victory over Forfar WE on Wednesday.

Both returned from suspension, with Milne cancelling out Graeme Hart’s eighth-minute penalty for West End in 21 minutes.

Then, just when a draw looked on the cards after a hard-fought clash, Lochee substitute McComiskie struck the winner in the final minute.

Meanwhile, Tayport visit Broughty Athletic looking for their first win of the season.

The Fifers have picked up only one point from their opening three games which wasn’t the start new manager Chris McPherson was looking for.

However, Broughty will be determined to keep the points at home.

The Fed had to work hard for their 2-1 midweek win over North End.

Liam McArtney gave the Dokens the lead but the visitors hit back through Bryan Duell and Gary Fraser to take the points.

The Dokens will be hoping for better luck against Scone Thistle, who check into North End Park tomorrow.

Craig Mitchell is a doubt for the visitors but Steven Moon returns.

Downfield manager Paul Marr was a happy man after the Spiders picked up their first three points of the season with a 1-0 victory at Scone in midweek, the goal coming from a trialist.

The Spiders, who visit Kirrie Thistle tomorrow, were a tad fortunate when Scone’s Robbie Mitchell blasted a penalty over the bar with three minutes to go.
