Hoops not firing on all cylinders yet says boss

- BY GRAEME FINNAN

THE Dundee and District Youth Football Association kicked back into life last weekend as the new season began for U/13 th rough to U/19 teams.

In the U/16 Maryfield League, Celtic fought out a rare goalless draw at home to East Craigie Swifts.

The result was a disappointment for Hoops boss Eddie McPake, who watched his men pass up umpteen opportunities to win the game.

“We were very disappointed we didn’t get the victory,” said McPake.

“We certainly had the chances but we didn’t take them.

“To be fair, the first half was pretty even and not much between the teams and not many chances.

“However, after the break we were much better and their keeper pulled off a great save from a Jamie Downie shot.

“Scott Buchanan also hit the bar and we had other chances but we failed to take them and it’s a lesson for us. Saying that, we were pleased with the clean sheet and the back four and goalkeeper were solid.”

McPake, who is assisted by Billy Rattray and Kevin Hughes, admits his team may take a bit of time to gel after recruiting several new faces over the summer.

Along with Buchanan, the club has signed midfield duo Reece Ross and Liam McPake, while Ryan McGregor and Lewis Davidson have come in to bolster the attack.

However, after losing out to Forfar by one point for the league title last season, it wasn’t the start McPake was looking for and he’s urging his team to make amends when they head to face Kirrie on Sunday.

“We beat them every time last season but that means nothing,” he warned.

“What I’m looking for is the players starting to show signs of gelling.

“Once we do that, we’ll start putting wins on the board.”
