Late-goal relief as ’Muir get the better of Ferry

- BY GRAEME FINNAN

FAIRMUIR Violet U/19 have made a terrific start to the new ca mpa ig n, w it h last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Ferry Athletic making it four wins from four games.

However, the Dundee and District Youth Football Association outfit were made to work for the points and only a last-minute goal ensured victory against a stuffy Ferry side.

A cagey opening half saw chances few and far between as the sides cancelled each other out.

The deadlock was broken just before the break when a corner from Matthew Nelson was met by Ahmad Drammeh and the striker rose highest to bullet a header into the back of the net.

The second 45 followed a similar pattern to the first and, although Ferry had three or four half-chances, the Fairmuir keeper never had a save of note to make.

However, with the game drawing to a close, and as Ferry pushed more men forward in search of an equaliser, Fairmuir hit them on the counter-attack and Steve Abbot played the ball across the face of the goal for Kieran McWilliam to tap into the empty net.

Fairmuir boss Graham Buchan admitted he was relieved to see his side grab their second goal.

However, he’s been more than delighted with the way his team have gelled in the opening few weeks of the season and the results they have produced.

He said: “We lost one or two players over the summer and have six new faces in the team who remained from last season’s 19s, so we have to be happy with the start we’ve made.

“We rode our luck at times last Sunday but our skipper Mark McCrory and centre-half Fraser Nelson were outstanding.”

However, Fairmuir’s great start to the season was brought to a shuddering halt last night as their depleted squad lost 3-2 to East Craigie Swifts.
