Captain Kerr enjoying being at the helm for McDiarmid Park men

-

ST JOHNSTONE appointed Jason Kerr as skipper at the start of the season and the 22-year-old has had a tough baptism.

Saints performed poorly in their Betfred Cup section with losses against Montrose, Ross County and Forfar Athletic being offset by a win against Brechin City.

A 7-0 defeat away to Celtic on the opening day of t he l eague season followed, then came draws against Livingston and Hibs before a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock.

Aberdeen away are next up on Saturday followed by Rangers at home a week on Sunday, so it doesn’t get any easier for the Perth men.

However, Kerr isn’t fazed by the tough start.

“It’s a hard beginning to the league season and we didn’t do well in the Betfred Cup but, despite all that, I’m enjoying it,” he said.

“The gaffer told me a couple of years ago that one day I would captain the side and now that has come to pass, although, I was a wee bit surprised when he informed me.

“I have a lot of good experienced players round about who are helping me, guys like Liam Craig, Zander Clark, Murray Davidson and Danny Swanson.”

Kerr i s now counting down to the fixture against the Dons.

“We have done well there recently, winning a few times including 2-0 at Pittodrie a couple of years back. I’ve good memories of that and, hopefully, I will come away with good memories on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, Saints kid Cammy Ballantyne has joined League One Montrose on loan until January.

And he is in good company, as the 19-year-old midfielder joins former Dundee United kid of the same name at Links Park.
