New funeral benefit will help families

-

AN improved funeral benefit was launched today that will provide vital support to more than 200 families across Dundee each year.

The Funeral Support Payment replaces the previous Funeral Expense Payment for people living in Scotland.

The Scottish Government estimates a 40% increase in uptake under the new benefits system from Social Security Scotland.

Those who wish to apply for the benefits can do so via the government agency directly, or through funeral directors.

Family funeral directors Sturrock, Comb & Davidson have welcomed the launch of the Funeral Support Payment, but have stressed the need for bereaved families to compare like-for-like costs at funeral providers.

Dundee funeral director Ian Sturrock said: “Everyone deserves a dignified, respectful send-off, and all bereaved families need appropriate closure and time to grieve.

“Across Dundee, financial concern

local has increased. With widened eligibility and simplified application process, the new Funeral Support Payment will hopefully offer more families access to financial support than ever before.”

The previous payment supported about 4,000 low-income Scots each year. The government has invested an additional £2 million in the benefit, bringing total investment up to an estimated £6 million in its first year.

Information on eligibility and how to apply is available at mygov.scot/ benefits.
