Globetrotting Saint is ready for test when Rangers come to town

-

WHILE most players were getting extra time off at the recent international break, St Johnstone midfield man David Wotherspoon was on his travels.

He was in the Canada squad for two Nations League ties against Cuba.

He didn’t appear in the 6-0 Toronto win but did play for 55 minutes in the second match.

Canada won again, this time by only 1-0, and the second game was played in the searing heat of the Cayman Islands.

“That second match was played in hot, humid, muggy conditions on a poor pitch but I enjoyed the trip,” said Wotherspoon who is in the Perth side’s squad to face Rangers at home on Sunday (12.15pm).

“That 1-0 win was my first start for Canada and I felt I did OK.

“Playing for Canada is a great experience and I’m hoping to be in the squad again next month when we face the United States in Toronto in another Nations Cup tie.”

Despite the huge amount of travelling involved, Wotherspoon was back in Scotland in time to take his place on the substitutes bench against Aberdeen away last Saturday.

Jason Holt is ineligible to play against Rangers as he can’t be i n v o lv e d against his parent club so Wotherspoon may get a start on Sunday.

He went on: “I’m fit and ready to play.

“We’ve had a tough start to the season and this is another hard game.

“However, we played well at Aberdeen and, perhaps, should have won.”

Michael O’Halloran, who had a spell with Rangers, has netted against Hibs and Aberdeen, and is likely to again play.

Stevie May could make his first home start since returning to the club and, with Matty Kennedy also set to play, Saints will have plenty pace up front.
