Bluebells through for a Glasgow date

- BY JUNICUS

LOCHEE United will play BSC Glasgow in round two of the William Hill Scottish Cup after they secured their place in the hat with a 3-1 victory at Edinburgh University.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from the Bluebells but they did what was required, particularly in the second half.

Both sides had chances in the first half but it ended goalless.

George Shields’ side started the second 45 brightly and took the lead when a cross was floated in and Scott McComiskie was on the spot to head in the opener.

Lochee missed chances to double their lead and paid the penalty when Paddy Baird headed home the equaliser from a corner.

The home joy didn’t last long, however, as McComiskie struck again to regain the lead for the Bluebells.

Then Lochee killed off the Uni side with a third from Grant Lawson.

Meanwhile, Carnoustie stretched their lead to five points in the Super League with a 4-1 win at Kirrie Thistle.

It was the Gowfers’ second win on successive Saturdays over Thistle but this one was more emphatic than the 1-0 cup win the previous week.

The Laing Park side were awarded a penalty in 19 minutes which was converted by Sam Simpson.

They doubled their lead in 42 minutes when they were given another penalty and Simpson duly obliged once again.

The second half was only a minute old when a scramble in the Kirrie goalmouth ended with a defender deflecting into his own net.

Kirrie’s miserable day was complete when Jamie Winter slammed in No 4.

Thistle did manage to pull one back through Cammy Black but it was no more than a consolation.

A hard-fought clash at Downfield Park ended with the hosts and Broughty Athletic sharing the points.

It was a fair result in a game that ebbed and flowed with both sides having their spells of domination.

Broughty sprung a surprise with two new signings in their line-up.

Josh Skelly was up front while former Forfar West End player/ manager Daryl McKenzie took up a position in midfield.

The Fed broke the deadlock in 39 minutes when Skelly was pulled down in the box and he converted the resultant spot-kick himself.

The Spiders rallied in the second half and deservedly drew level in 63 minutes with a terrific long-range strike from Dale Davidson.

Both sides had chances to go on and claim all three points in the closing stages but both defences stood firm.
