Late double secures ’Port’s cup passage

- BY JUNICUS

TAYPORT reached the third round of the Macron Scottish Cup after safely negotiating their replay against Girvan.

There was no repeat of last week’s goal deluge, however, with all the action coming in the final 15 minutes of the 2-0 win.

Neither side looked like scoring but the introduction of home substitute Tom Whyte did the trick in 75 minutes when his emphatic finish following a goalmouth scramble gave ’Port the lead.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men when Harvey picked up a second yellow card.

Three minutes later, Dayle Robertson made sure it was the Fifers who go into the hat for the third round when he lobbed the ball over the keeper for the ’Port’s second.

Meanwhile, Carnoustie are now seven points clear at the top of the Super League after an impressive 3-1 win over Forfar West End.

The Gowfers took an early lead through Paul McLellan and the writing was on the wall for the visitors when Ryan Dignan and McLellan, with his second, added two more.

West End did manage to pull one back from a penalty with 15 minutes to go but by then the damage was done.

Lochee United are up to second after a slightly fortunate 2-1 win over Scone Thistle at Thomson Park.

The Bluebells missed a host of chances and were caught out in 70 minutes when Scone broke clear and Darren Gray fired them into the lead.

It looked like they would hold on to secure the points but, with four minutes to go, the Bluebells finally found the net when Kevin Milne knocked in an equaliser.

The visitors were then left shattered when Lochee were awarded a penalty in stoppage time and sub Scott McComiskie made no mistake from the spot to give his side the win.

Broughty Athletic snatched a draw at Luncarty with virtually the last kick of the match.

Luncarty went in ahead at half-time thanks to a Robbie Holden goal after 35 minutes. However, the Fed hit back with a Josh Skelly equaliser.

The hosts regained the lead in 81 minutes through Richard Donovan but the Fed never gave up and were rewarded when Greg Warwick lashed in the equaliser in the dying seconds.

Downfield looked set to burst the North End bubble when goals from Dale Davidson and Kerr Hay gave the Spiders a commanding lead.

But the Dokens came storming back with a double from Ryan Smith to earn a share of the points in a 2-2 draw.
