Amazing goal from Martin seals GM win

GROVE Menzieshill’s men’s hockey side are back on track in the Premiership after a 3-1 win over Clydesdale.

An early penalty stroke conversion by Albert Rowling set them on the right track and a second before the interval by Luke Cranney all but confirmed their superiority.

Menzieshill had the better of the possession in the second half but failed to capitalise in front of goal until an amazing strike by Paul Martin.

He failed to control a pass to him i nside the circle but the ball rose to head height. His quick reactions saw him lob the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the net.

Clydesdale did get on the scoresheet late in the game but the points were already Menzieshill’s.

Grange head the table after their fourth straight win, 3-1 against Dundee Wanderers.

Elliot Sandison was Wanderers’ only scorer but they move to the foot of the table after Kelburne’s surprising 6-3 win over Watsonians. The Edinburgh side are now ninth, two points ahead of Wanderers.

Grange opened up a three-point gap between themselves and Menzieshill, Edinburgh University and Western Wildcats with their 7-2 win over Uddingston.

On Sunday, Wanderers had the opportunity to move out of the relegation positions when Kelburne were the visitors at Dalnacraig.

Kelburne had recorded their first win against Watsonians and were a much-improved team from their early season form.

They led 1-0 at half-time and extended that to 2-0 in the third quarter.

Wanderers were not out of the contest as they showed when Blair Williams netted. However, despite late pressure, they just could not find a leveller.

Perthshire lost 10-3 to Inverleith.

Ross Glashan was very instrumental in Monarchs’ 5-2 win over Aberdeen University with a hat-trick.

Harris lost 6-1 at home to Highland.

The clash between Dundee Wanderers and Grove Menzieshill seldom disappoints and this weekend’s encounter should be no different.

The teams are at either end of the Premiership but that does not necessarily lead to a one-sided match.

Perthshire and St Andrews University are fairly well set in Division Two mid-table.

Monarchs face a difficult challenge in Division Three against a Highland team which is well organised, sharp in front of goal and is going for promotion, as are Monarchs. Home advantage may just count in favour of Monarchs.

Harris will find it difficult again, even with home advantage against Granite City Wanderers, who are also likely to be in the mix at the top of the division.

The Harris youngsters are gaining valuable experience but it may take more time for that to come to fruition.

The Midland League returns to action having had a three-week break after only two weeks of competition.

The stronger teams in Division One on Saturday should be Wanderers II, Perthshire II, Wanderers III and St Andrews University II.

The accent is different for the Sunday teams, development being the
