Wanderers work hard to maintain their lead

-

DUNDEE Wanderers women’s hockey team retained the lead in the Premiership with a 2-0 win over second-placed Clydesdale Western. However, they had to work hard throughout.

Clydesdale seemed to have greater possession and pressure when Mhairi Miller netted the opener for Wanderers towards the end of the first half.

The west side began the second half with more pressure on the Wanderers defence which resulted in them having the ball in the net only to have been awarded a penalty corner.

They failed to convert that and a corner and their efforts brought out the best in Iona Colquhoun in Wanderers’ goal.

Wanderers struck again in the last minute. Emily Dark took the ball from just inside Clydesdale’s half and into their circle where she set up Vikki Bunce, who netted for a 2-0 victory.

Wanderers have a threepoint lead at the top of the Premiership but will have a testing match against Edinburgh University this week.

The students’ form has not been the best with two defeats but they are still top scorers in the division.

Conceding goals at two per game is clearly an area in which Edinburgh are deficient, especially when compared with Wanderers’ record of having conceded only one in five games.

Winning this match would be a big statement for the Dundee side.

Grove Menzieshill won 6-1 against Gordonians at DISC.

They rattled in four goals in the first half through

Sam Sangster from a penalty corner, Katie Stott, Lucy Murray and Lauren Kingston.

Stott increased Grove’s advantage from a penalty and Sangster completed their scoring from a wellworked penalty corner. Gordonians’ late counter was only a consolation.

Grove Menzieshill are away to Clydesdale and, despite their improving form, may find the west team too strong.

As the team improves defensively then so will their ability to challenge for a top-four place for the end-of-season play-offs.

St Andrews University are eighth in Division Two but can move up with a win over Kelburne.
