‘Embarrassing defeat needs to be motivation’

- BY GEORGE CRAN

STRIKER Nicky Clark says Dundee United need to use the “embarrassing” 4-0 defeat at Queen of the South as motivation to kick them on to promotion from the Championship.

The Tangerines fell to a second successive defeat at Clark’s old side Queens at the weekend as they were well beaten on the road once more – their third away loss on the bounce.

They welcome another of Clark’s old teams Dunfermline to Tannadice this weekend and the 28-year-old says nothing but victory will do.

He told the Tele: “Sometimes you can turn these bad results into motivation because Saturday was embarrassing.

“It’s not good enough going and getting beaten 4-0 as Dundee United.

“We need to show this week that we don’t accept that and turn it around.

“Saturday was a kick in the backside but we’ll keep going, we have a great dressing-room, we’ll stick together and I’m sure it will turn for us.

“We have another game this week to put things right and it’s massive that we go and do that against Dunfermline.

“I’m sure the fans will back us again and we need to show them a performance.”

At Palmerston, the match was fairly even before Queens got the first goal through Stephen Dobbie.

After that the Tangerines struggled and Clark says it’s vital they are the side to take the lead this weekend.

He added: “Getting the first goal is important, especially for us.

“We are the big team in the league and everybody wants to come and do well against us.

“If the opposition go 1-0 up then it makes life so much harder for us because they’ll just sit with two banks of four or maybe a four and a five and challenge us to break them down.

“That is tough and it works for a lot of teams.

“The first goal is massive in this league but, if you don’t get it you still have to find a way to break the opposition down and we haven’t managed to do that recently.”
