Wright praises fans and asks them to stick by his stuttering Saints

-

ST JOHNSTONE manager Tommy Wright has praised his club’s fans for sticking behind the team despite their poor start to the season.

He said: “I understand the fans are disgruntled because of the start we have made.

“The away support was brilliant during our defeat against St Mirren on Saturday. They backed the team which is all we can ask.

“Hopefully, t he f ans come in good numbers for home game against Hamilton this Saturday.

“We need to all come together, get behind the players, and give them the confidence not only to win this game but to kick on from there.

“We need to keep believing in each other and work hard to put things right.”

Wright pointed out that Saints beat Hamilton 4-0 at McDiarmid Park at around the same stage last season.

“We need to play to that level and get the first goal which I think is often vital in this league,” Wright said.

“Hopefully, we can get in front early and control the match against a team we know are difficult to beat.”

He added: “It was a case of same old story against St Mirren.

“Games are won in both penalty boxes and, again, individual errors and not taking chances cost us.

“I thought we started the game really well.

“We were on top for the first 35 minutes and had a number of chances which we weren’t able to convert to put us ahead.

“Matty Kennedy and Anthony Ralston had great opportunities while we had other shots blocked.

“We then gave away a soft free-kick and, from it, St Mirren took the lead.

“What was most disappointing, though, was the response in the second half which was extremely poor.”
