Candidates are revealed
Parties unveil those standing in the city’s constituencies
THE full list of candidates standing for Dundee seats in the general election has been unveiled.
Fixed for December 12, the Christmas-time election has been called by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a bid to secure a majority for his Brexit deal.
At the time Parliament was dissolved last week, the Conservatives had 298 MPs. Mr Johnson needs another 28 for a majority.
In Scotland, the SNP is hoping to challenge Conservative seats such as Angus, won by Kirstene Hair in 2017, in order to reduce the PM’s chances of success.
In Dundee West, incumbent SNP MP Chris Law will be hoping to retain his seat first won in 2015, but will face competition from veteran Labour MSP Jenny Marra.
There was a 12-point swing away from Mr Law in 2017’s election, with support rising amongst Labour and the Tories.
Also standing in Dundee West are Conservative businesswoman Tess White, Brexit Party candidate Stuart Waiton, and Liberal
Democrat community campaigner Daniel Coleman.
Across the city, Stewart Hosie will be hoping to hold his seat in Dundee East for a fourth consecutive time. His challengers include Ferry councillor Philip Scott for the Conservatives and community activist Jim Malone for Labour.
The Tories leapfrogged Labour in the 2017 election to finish second – albeit 6,645 votes behind the SNP.
The Liberal Democrats are fielding Michael Crichton, a former Grove Academy pupil, as their candidate for Dundee East.
However, the Brexit Party candidate Calum Walker has stepped aside, calling on supporters of his party to back the Conservatives.
And the Scottish Greens have opted not to field candidates in the city in order to focus on campaigning against Kirstene Hair in Angus.
The party says Ms Hair is “against everything we are for” such as renewable energy and a hard Brexit.
