Rachel to go on run for charity

-

THE sister of a Kirkcaldy teenager who died of meningitis is to take to the streets to raise money and awareness of the devastating illness.

Rachel Smith will run a half-marathon in memory of her brother Gregor, who was just 13 when he died within hours of falling ill in 2013.

She hopes taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival on May 24 in aid of Meningitis Now will help prevent others going through what she and her family experienced after Gregor was initially misdiagnosed by a doctor.

Rachel, who was 15 at the time, said her brother’s death had been shockingly quick.

“Gregor was 13 years old when he woke on February 24 2013 with a high temperature and sore legs,” she said.

“He then grew weaker and at midday he was taken to A&E where he was diagnosed with a viral bug and sent home.

“Gregor then returned to A&E three hours later as a rash had started to spread over his body.

“He passed away six hours later with his family at his side, the cause being meningococcal septicaemia.”

Almost seven years on, Rachel is keen to race in memory of her brother, who was a talented footballer and swimmer.

“I feel as though the work that the charity does, raising awareness around the symptoms of meningitis, is extremely vital,” she said.

TECH lovers in Dundee were spoiled on Wednesday night as BBC’s Click performed a live show at the V&A.

Hundreds packed into the design museum to see presenters Kate Russell and Spencer Kelly record the show, with many audience members getting involved through polls and questions.

The event included various guests from at home and abroad, such as Dr Lynn Love and Dr Mona Bozdog from Abertay University, who gave a talk on video games and their relationship with society and Dundee.

A N OBSESSI V E thug who br uta l ly beat up and sexually abused his ex-partner is appealing his sentence.

Darren Ogilvie, 36, demanded to check Lyndsay Buchan’s genitals for signs of cheating, ripped chunks out of her hair and pinned her to a wall at a Dundee flat.

He also spat on her face, held her in a headlock, punched her, grabbed her throat and caused her to urinate on herself.

Lyndsay previously waived her legal right to anonymity and spoke to the Tele about the attacks Ogilvie subjected her to.

She described him as manipulative and obsessive, saying he would track her location using GPS on her mobile phone when she was at work and smell her underwear when she came home to check she was not out having sex.

Ogilvie, a prisoner at Perth, pled guilty at Dundee Sheriff Court to six charges of domestic and sexual abuse, making threats to Lyndsay and approaching her against bail orders.
