Improving Spiders creeping up table

- BY JUNICUS

SU PE R Leag ue leaders Ca r noust ie cou ld be on da ngerous ter r itor y t h is weekend as they head to Downfield Park.

The Gowfers will face an in-form Spiders side who, almost un-noticed, have crept up to third place in the table.

Downfield have won their last four matches and will be out to avenge a 4-0 defeat when the sides met earlier in the season at Laing Park.

Paul Marr’s team are a different proposition these days and this could spell danger for the visitors.

However, Carnoustie’s record is equally impressive, losing only once so far this season while they are unbeaten in their last nine matches.

It promises to be a cracking clash, with Marr unlikely to show many changes from the side that beat Lochee United last week.

The Spiders boss will, however, be without Dale Davidson through suspension.

Carnoustie will again be minus Jake Mair, who is still recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

Second-placed Broughty Athletic play host to Luncarty.

The Fed will be favourites on current form but will be wary after being held to a 2-2 draw when the teams met earlier in the season.

Jamie McCunnie’s side have won their last five matches and have happy memories of a 6-3 win when they last met the Bleachers at Whitton Park.

With Greg Warwick making a return, McCunnie is able to name a full-strength pool.

Luncarty gaffer Jon Kelly is without experienced duo Stuart Nicol and Richie Montgomery through suspension.

On the plus side, Chris Anton and Calum Kirkcaldy have recovered from their injuries and return to the squad.

Lochee United will be out to halt a run of two-successive defeats when North End check into Thomson Park.

The Bluebells have looked out of sorts recently and, with Tony McAulay getting his first win under his belt with last week’s win at Forfar WE, the Dokens are sure to be up for the challenge.

They also go into the game with the knowledge they beat the Bluebells 3-1 when the pair last met.

George Shields’ Lochee side are without a victory in their last three matches and a win must be a priority if they are to retain an interest in retaining their league title.

McAulay is likely to give a vote of confidence to last week’s winning squad while Garry Kenneth is a major doubt for the hosts.
