Seventhheaven for Wanderers

-

DUNDEE Wanderers Women rounded off the league part of their Division One competition with two more victories, thus winning all seven initial matches.

Victory over Grove in the opening match was to be expected. A goal apiece by Emily Dark and Amy Snelle gave Wanderers a 2-0 half-time lead and they extended this to 4-0 by the end, Ruth Blaikie and Dark adding to the score.

Wanderers’ second match against Inverleith was closer in the early stages at 2-2 with Blaikie and Dark on target.

The Dundee team then took control with Milly Skidmore, Snelle and Vikki Bunce establishing a 5-2 lead.

Despite a revival from Inverleith closing the gap to 5-4, Skidmore, Heather Howie and Dark (2) gave Wanderers a 9-4 lead and, although Inverleith pulled one back, the final score of 9-5 was a fair reflection.

Grove Menzieshill won their last two matches to move into sixth place, only a point behind Edinburgh University.

Grove and Grange were tied at 2-2 in the early exchanges, Sam Sangster getting both Grove goals.

Thereafter, Grove eased to a 6-2 win with Ellie Stott, Katie Stott, Lucy Smith and Holly Duval all on target.

Grove won their last game against Hillhead by the odd goal in five, Smith, Sam Sangster (at a penalty corner) and Molly Godfrey doing the damage for Grove.

The teams will go straight into the second stage play-offs on Sunday.

Pool A will comprise teams in positions 1, 4, 5 and 8, namely Dundee Wanderers, Watsonians, Edinburgh University and Grange.

Pool B will be Clydesdale Western, Inverleith, Grove Menzieshill and Hillhead.

The teams will carry forward the results of their pool with further crossover matches later to determine the ultimate winners and relegation.

Wanderers II are well placed in Division Two, third behind Edinburgh CALA on goals scored but eight points behind Western Wildcats with five games remaining.

Two wins should be on the cards for Wanderers II on Sunday against Aberdeen Bon Accord and Clydesdale II, both in the lower half of the division.

Grove II are currently sixth but nine points clear of Inverleith II, who are strong relegation favourites.

Grove II’s first match against Inverleith II should surely yield three points but fourth-placed Granite City Wanderers might prove quite different opposition, currently being in fourth place.

Victory in both games could propel Grove II into the top half of the table.

Perthshire will have two very different matches i n Division Three, first against bottom team Watsonians II and later against Stirling Wanderers, who are similarly placed to the Perth club.
