Singer KT back at her old school for concert

- BY MATTEO BELL

CHART-TOPPING artist KT Tunstall went back to her old school to perform some of her biggest hits for current students.

The Scottish singer made an impression on pupils and staff at Dundee High with both her music and cooking skills, during a special visit as part of the ‘Lidl Live’ tour of Scotland.

The supermarket held the event as it prepared for the opening of its new store in Craigie Retail Park – which will start trading on Thursday February 27.

KT grew up in St Andrews, and attended Dundee High for three years.

It was in Dundee that the singer first started busking, playing on the flyover between Tayside House and the old Olympia leisure centre, which has all since been demolished.

She shot to fame in 2004 when she performed Black Horse and The Cherry Tree on Later...With Jools Holland – a song she also performed at Dundee High yesterday, as well as other hits including Suddenly I See.

Remembering her school days, KT said: “When I was going to school here there was a bit of a lack of pride from Dundonians.

“There were a lot of more deprived, run-down areas.

“It’s definitely a lot more impressive now. I was playing a gig at Slessor Gardens in 2018 and I remember thinking that the V&A is absolutely stunning. I’d love to come back and play a gig here.

“That Slessor Gardens gig was incredible and I also remember playing a gig at Fat Sam’s which was a lot of fun.”

Senior pupils also provided their former student with a tour of the music department, and some of the school’s younger children were given a home economics lesson by the Brit Award winner.

Alex Fish, a senior pupil at the school, said: “I think it’s good for KT to come here.

“Obviously, it’s always good to get back to your roots, and it’s good for the kids here to have something tangible that they can aspire to be.”

The visit to the school followed a tour of the new Lidl site at Kingsway East earlier in the day.

The new unit is due to open next month and will create 40 full and part-time jobs.

The plans were narrowly approved by councillors in

June 2017.
