McCunnie leaves it late for Scottish tie

- BY JUNICUS

IT’S a big day for Broughty A t h l e t i c a n d Ta y p o r t tomorrow as both bid for a place in the quarter-finals of the Macron Scottish Cup.

On paper, Broughty seem to have the better chance of going through with a home tie against St Roch’s, while Tayport were handed the tie no one wanted, a trip to Ayrshire to meet cup holders Auchinleck Talbot.

St Roch’s play in the West Region Championship League and they currently sit in 12th position with 18 points from 18 matches.

They earned a trip to Broughty after beating Johnstone Burgh 3-2 in the last round and previously they beat Lesmahagow 2-0 and Renfrew 1-0 after a 0-0 draw.

Two men Broughty would do well to keep an eye on are Liam Coogan and Ryan McManus, their top scorers this season on nine goals.

With home advantage, the Fed have every reason to be confident but will take nothing for granted.

Manager Jamie McCunnie has a couple of players nursing knocks and will make a late selection but he will be without Ross McCord, who is suspended.

Tayport face a daunting task against 13-time winners of the trophy Talbot.

The Ayrshire side were given a bit of a fright in the last round when Rossvale took the lead but, like true champions, they hit back with two goals to take the tie.

In the third round they were 3-0 winners over Forfar WE and kicked off their campaign with a 7-0 victory over Bellshill in round two.

The Fifers will go into the tie as underdogs but all the pressure is on a Talbot side expected to win.

’Port will go into the tie on a decent run of form, having won their last two matches and, with nothing to lose, will give it their best shot.

Boss Chris McPherson should have a full squad apart from Ryan Suttie, who is suspended.
