Pupils at youth summit

TA Y S I D E s e c o n d a r y school pupils are preparing to join global peers at a US youth leadership conference.

The Loudoun Internatio­nal Youth Leadership Summit will bring together almost 200 young people in 45 internatio­nal delegation­s for a 10-day programme in the Virginia County event close to Washington DC.

For the second year in succession, Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir will send f our senior pupils to the summit, with the school being the only UK representa­tives at the 2020 event.

School captain Abby Thomson, Orla Finn and Nathan Marshall, all 17, as well as fellow sixth-year student John Shanks, 16, have carried out much of their own fundraisin­g to make the trip, with support from local groups and organisati­on.

The summit was establishe­d i n 2012 and the Angus teenagers will live with host families during their stay, taking part in talks and workshops.

PLANS for eight of the 16 digital phonebooth­s proposed for Dundee city centre have bee n w it hd raw n by t he adve r t i si ng f i r m partnering the council on the project.

JCDecaux teamed up with Dundee City Council last year to design and pitch the large hightech booths, which would offer free phone calls and access to council services.

In total, 16 different sites were proposed when the applicatio­ns were made public in October – but eight of those now appear to have been scrapped.

The council’s planning division has revealed that plans for booths have been withdrawn from the following sites:

Panmure Street, outside the Wellgate Centre;

Panmure Street, outside Brewdog;

Yeaman Shore;

City Square;

South Marketgait, outside the Overgate;

72-76 Murraygate, outside HMV;

22 Reform Street, outside the Pancake Place;
