Duell’s double helps Fed reach last eight

- BY JUNICUS

BROUGHTY Athletic are left to carry the flag for the East Region in the Scottish Cup after they were the only side of the remaining three to win their tie on Saturday.

The Fed were 2-1 winners over St Roch’s but didn’t get it all their own way in a hard-fought tie against the Glasgow side.

Broughty took the lead in 13 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for handball and Bryan Duell tucked away the spot-kick.

The goal settled the home side but St Roch’s still looked dangerous and levelled in 29 minutes when Kieran Martin took advantage of slack defending by the Fed.

The hosts regained the lead just on the interval when the visiting keeper

John Stark wiped out Derryn Kesson and, for the second time, Duell sent the keeper the wrong way to give his side the lead.

The tie was far from finished, though, and the visitors almost drew level when a terrific strike from Dean Kindlan hit the underside of the bar but rebounded to safety.

It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the game with Broughty creating a number of late chances as the visitors pressed forward.

However, it ended 2-1 for Broughty, who now go into the hat for the quarter-final draw.

Meanwhile, Tayport looked set for a hiding when Bryan Boylan gave Auchinleck the lead after only 25 seconds.

They recovered well, however, as the Fifers fought back to equalise and only lost to a last-minute Talbot winner.

’Port had deservedly hit back in 72 minutes through Kris Rollo.

The visitors were desperately unlucky not to take the lead when Dayle Robertson was denied by a super save from home keeper Andy Leishman, who was later voted Man of the Match.

A replay looked on the cards but the Fifers’ dreams were shattered when Dwayne Hyslop headed in a rather undeserved winner for the cup holders in the final minute.

Fauldhouse are also out after losing 4-0 at Pollok.

RESULT of the week – BROUGHTY ATHLETIC’S 2-1 win over St Roch’s gets the nod.
