TRIBUTES AS MAN, 39, IS FOUND DEAD

Police investigate ‘unexplained’ death

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A MAN who died in “unexplained” circumstances over the weekend has been named locally as Ryan Barrie.

Police sealed off Benvie Gardens yesterday as forensics officers erected a tent and were seen scouring the street throughout the day.

Police remained at the scene today as they continued to probe the 39-year-old’s death.

One neighbour paid tribute to Mr Barrie and said he first became aware of the situation when officers arrived at his door.

He said: “It was a massive shock. I knew the guy to say hello to and he was a great guy.

“Police came to our door yesterday and asked if we heard a disturbance late on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

“They didn’t go into any more details but we saw forensics officers combing the scene and the tent went up around 10am yesterday.

“The main police cordon must have come down late yesterday evening.”

A woman who didn’t wish to be named said the area was generally very quiet. She added: “People use the steps which connect Benvie Gardens and Baxter Street but apart from that it is very quiet.

“We didn’t leave our house but people had to be signed in and out.

“Police came to our door to advise there had been a disturbance between midnight on Saturday and 4am yesterday.

“We didn’t know the guy very well but he was a nice chap and always said hello.”

Another neighbour, who also wished to remain anonymous, said he had seen police officers in the street yesterday morning.

He said: “There was no sound of a disturbance.

“The first thing I knew about it was seeing police in the street at 9.30am.

“I was very shocked to see what was going on. The guy who died was always smiling.

“The road was still closed around midnight and it must have reopened in the early hours of the morning.”

A tent was still erected near the entrance of one of the properties today while another house also remained sealed off.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed an investigation had been launched following the man’s death.

She said: “Around 2.50am on Sunday, officers received a report a 39-year-old man had died on Benvie Gardens, Dundee.

“Officers attended and the death is being treated as unexplained. Inquiries are ongoing.”
